Description#
Crochet is a looped-thread construction technique worked with a single hooked needle, distinct from knitting’s two-needle interlock and from weaving’s crossed-warp-and-weft structure. A single active loop is drawn through successive stitches to build a fabric of chains, single and double crochet stitches, and open shell or filet patterns, which lets a maker shape flat panels, three-dimensional forms, and openwork lace within one continuous thread. The technique produces both dense, sturdy fabric and fine, airy lace from the same base stitch vocabulary, depending on hook size, thread weight, and stitch density.
Cultural context#
The technique has no single indigenous Indian region of origin. It entered India’s needlework economy in the colonial period through European lace and needlework training, and it persists today less as a hereditary craft lineage and more as a widely diffused skill carried by women’s self-help groups and small workshops across several states, producing garments, accessories, and home textiles for both domestic and export gifting markets.
Design applications#
The technique suits accessory and small-object gifting applications, bags, pouches, and trim work, where a hand-looped texture reads as a deliberate handcraft signal against manufactured packaging.
