Marble Inlay names the parchin kari tradition of Agra, the technique of cutting and inlaying semi-precious stones into marble grounds. The tradition extends directly from the Mughal-period Taj Mahal and Itmad-ud-Daulah floral inlay work; contemporary workshops in Agra produce tabletops, plaques, and architectural panels in the same vocabulary. The lapis lazuli, malachite, mother-of-pearl, and red carnelian palette is the recognized signature.

## Cultural context

The tradition runs through specific Agra workshop families with multi-generational lineage from the Mughal-era artisan cluster. The work is GI-protected and continues as a living workshop tradition.

## Design applications

Direct Create included marble inlay in the RISD INDIA_SENSED Winter Session 2023 craft network. The technique adapts well to high-end hospitality and residential surfaces where the floral inlay vocabulary can carry an Indian luxury register.
