Definition
The Commentary is the accumulating body of interpretation that grows around delivered Culture Stacks. It is how Direct Create supports a designer reading a Study after delivery, and it is how those interpretations compound into a shared, retrievable resource rather than evaporating into one-off advice. The Commentary is captured one Annotation at a time and operates under the same two laws that govern the rest of the canon. Terms used here are defined in the DC-KE Glossary.
A Study is read, not executed
The Culture Stack is a substrate a designer builds on. The designer does not run it for an output; they read it, make meaning from it, and return to it. An architect, a landscape designer, a brand lead, and a product designer read the same Study differently, each through their own training and experience, and each reading can be right. Meaning is completed in the reading, which is why the Study holds its evidence firmly and leaves its design implications open. The open meaning is the room the designer works in.
Understanding develops by moving between the part and the whole and back again: a designer reads a chapter, forms a view, tests it against the rest of the Study, and returns to reconfirm as the work develops. The Study earns its keep by being a stable reference the designer comes back to, never a brief consumed once and discarded.
The Commentary
Delivering the Study is the start of the work, not the end. Direct Create’s continuing value is helping creatives interpret it: when they are unclear, when a new situation appears that the Study did not foresee, or when two readings conflict. That help is the Commentary, and it is built so it compounds rather than evaporating into one-off advice.
How the Commentary compounds
Every interpretation Direct Create gives is captured as an Annotation: the situation, the part of the Study in question, the reading offered, the reasoning, and how it resolved. A new situation is met by retrieving the Annotations of similar past situations, adapting the reading, applying it, and retaining the new case. Readings that recur across many situations harden into principles, the way a body of interpretation grows around any foundational text. The advisory that today lives in one person’s head becomes a retrievable, shared body of practice the engine holds.
Annotations land in wiki/commentary/ in the repo, one file per Annotation, captured at the moment of work rather than reconstructed later. The annotation template carries the situation, the part of the Study in question, the reading offered, the reasoning, the resolution, and tags that make the entry retrievable for the next similar case.
Two stages
Stage one, the service. Direct Create remains the interpreter. Annotations are captured as the work happens, and the Commentary grows into a usable body with emergent principles. This is buildable now and turns the advisory into an asset.
Stage two, the assistant. Once the Commentary is rich, an assistant grounded in the Study, the Annotations, and the principles helps a designer reason toward their own reading and check it against the chapters. It supports the reading; it never authors the design. Authorship stays with the creative throughout.
The line that must hold
The Commentary helps a reader interpret; it never decides for them, and it never turns a Study into a finished design. The Study informs and is interpreted; it does not author. That law holds for the service and for the assistant alike, and it reaches the same place as the advisory-implementation boundary that governs the practice.
